Aerodium

The vertical wind tunnel is a specific turbine making strong wind. Lying down on this vertical wind flow, you can touch the sky with your hands, perform various acrobatic movements, and enjoy before inexperienced emotions.

The vertical wind tunnel was designed as a training simulator for military parachutists and astronauts, but for the last few years it has also began to be used as entertainment. The first vertical wind tunnel meant for entertainment was invented in Canada in 1979, but couple of years ago similar vertical wind tunnel was made in Latvia. "Aerodium" is the first vertical wind tunnel in the Eastern Europe. It is located just before Sigulda.

It has become a popular way of entertainment providing incredible emotions.

If you have never done this, don't be scared, the coaches (instructors) of "Aerodium" are professionals. It is proved by the fact that "Aerodium" team has been invited to participate in the closing ceremony in Torino Winter Olympics in 2006.

Birch Sap

Birch sap or birch water is the sap directly tapped from birch trees.

Birch sap is collected only at the break of winter and spring when the sap moves intensively. When fresh, it is a clear and uncoloured liquid, very similar to water. After two to three days, the sap starts fermenting and the taste becomes more acidic.

Birch sap contains minerals, enzymes, proteins, betulinic acid and betulin, antioxidants, fructose and glucose and vitamins C and B.

Birch sap strengthens the immune system.

Tapping a tree does not harm the health of the tree.

Laima's Sign

As in every country, Latvia has its own culture with its ancestral "stuff". One of the things that are still alive nowadays are Latvian Signs. These signs holds something special and really powerful for Latvians. We can see a lot of signs in Latvian houses, items, books...

Each of the signs has its own meaning and it can affect everything that is related to it.

In this image we can see three signs, but all of these signs have the same meaning and the same title. It is a sign with three different ways to represent it. It is called Laima's Sign. Laima is a Latvian women's name. This sign holds success and luck meaning. It holds the destiny within it. It wipes all the bad away. Helps to finish one life period and start the next one.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Nowadays, the most popular place for these strong Latvians signs is on the human body, I mean tattoos.

Here is a tattoo with Latvians Signs and as you can see these signs can be put all together as one tattoo. The last one is Laima's Sign.

Every tattoo holds something powerful, therefore it can affect person who puts something like this on his/her body. It does not guarantee that it will bring all the positive things. In this case I want to mention, that anything you put on your body (tattoo) somehow affects you. Every number, letter or illustration holds its identity/meaning/affection, but that is something ESOTERIC, therefore, you need to think before you do something like that.

Different Cultures

In this post I am going to talk about some interesting facts that shows the difference in cultures between Europe and the United States.

Feeling of Distance and Time
THINGS ARE REVERSED WHEN IT COMES TO DISTANCES. EUROPEANS WOULD TEND TO THINK THAT DRIVING 100 KM IS QUITE A LONG WAY, WHILE FOR AMERICANS THAT WOULD BE RATHER NEAR. THIS IS DUE TO THE MUCH HIGHER DENSITY OF POPULATION IN EUROPE, AND THE SMALLER SIZE OF EUROPE.

IN EUROPE THEY USE TIME COUNTING FROM 1 TO 24. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN THEY SAY 1 PM IN THE USA, in the Europe it would be 13:00 or 11:15 pm in the USA means 23:15.

Cars

Almost all Europeans have cars with manual gears, while Americans have a marked preference for automatic ones.

Measure system
All Europeans use the metric system (metres, grammes, litres, Celsius, etc.). Although Americans do learn it at school, the vast majority of them still use the old English Imperial system (yards, miles, pounds, Fahrenheit, etc.).

Date Systems

Europeans write the date in the format "DAY MONTH YEAR", whereas Americans use "Month Day Year". Americans usually consider the week starts on Sunday and ends on Saturday, while in Europe it always starts on Monday and finishes on Sunday.

Schooling
Schools and Universities are free in most Europe countries. Europeans see University as granted, while American families often have to save for years for their children to attend one.

Food
Europeans eat more varied and balanced meals (especially in southern cultures) and less fast food than Americans (except maybe the Brits). Europeans eat more cheese (not just French!), more yogurts, and on average drink more wine and stronger beers than Americans.
Also, it still seems distasteful for me to eat pancakes, omelet and bacon together and pour it all with syrup.

The Monument of Freedom

42 meters tall in the very heart of Riga stands a symbol of Latvia - the Monument of Freedom, adorned with the title "For Fatherland and Freedom" and dedicated to the Latvian heroes in the fight for freedom. (www.latviatravel.com)

A young women holding three golden stars high above her head, symbolises the provinces of Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Latgale.

The monument was financed by the citizens of Latvia and was unveiled on November 18, 1935.

Renovation was last conducted in the period 1998-2001. (www.latviatravel.com)

A two-man Honour Guard stands at Freedom Monument daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It is possible for everyone to get as close as they want to the Monument of Freedom and it is the most "must see" object in Latvia.

"Medus kūka" a.k.a "Honey Cake"

I guess the best Latvian traditional desert is Honey Cake which is my favourite Latvian cake. It is simple and delicious. It requires a little bit of work, but it is definitely worth it!

Ingredients for 12 servings:

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup honey
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 16 ounce containers sour cream
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
Don't get scared away because of the sour cream, it matches perfectly with the sweet honey taste.

As I said previous, it takes a little time to make it delicious, but the taste of the cake will amaze you.
Here are directions how to make it:
  1. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C)
  2. Mix together eggs, honey, flour, and baking soda in a large bowl. Spoon 3 to 4 tablespoons of batter onto 5 9x13-inch sheets of parchment paper. Spread the mixture as thin as possible using a wide spatula. there is enough batter for 5 thin layers.
  3. Place one sheet of batter onto a baking pan and bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the baked cake layer from the baking sheet and prick with a fork to enhance filling absorbency. Repeat with the remaining 4 cake layers.
  4. Stir together the sour cream and sugar in a small bowl. Place one cake layer in 9x13-inch baking dish with the parchment paper side up. Carefully remove the parchment paper from the cake layer. Spread 1/5th of the sour cream mixture on the cake layer and then sprinkle 1/5th of the walnuts on the layer. Repeat the process with the remaining 4 layers. Cover and refrigerate overnights. Trim off any ragged edges before serving.
Cook the cake for 15 minutes and leave it for 9 hours in the fridge. It is gonna be great!
Enjoy!
